Hybrid cars use an electric motor and a petrol or diesel engine, offering a bridge between a traditional car and newer EVs. Drivers can rely on electric power, but know they have the petrol or diesel engine to fall back on if the battery is low or they are travelling a long way.
There are three types of hybrid cars for sale in New Zealand:
Parallel hybrid, which has an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, which provide power simultaneously.
Plug-in hybrid, which has an internal combustion engine and a larger battery pack that needs to be charged (hence the name ‘plug in’). Plug-in hybrids can run on electric power for longer than standard hybrids.
Series hybrid, where the petrol or diesel engine is only used to recharge the battery.
