Playcentre is where tamariki and their whānau play, learn and grow together and form connections with other whānau in their community.
Following the Ministry of Education early childhood education curriculum, Te Whāriki, Playcentre offers a rich array of resources and experiences to support learning through play for tamariki from birth to school age. Playcentre is fully licensed and funded by the Ministry of Education and adheres to all early childhood education regulations.
The learning experiences are set up to meet the interests of the tamariki and the high adult to child ratio ensure all tamariki are supported. Mixed age play allows tamariki to interact with others older and younger than themselves.
Playcentres operate in the morning (usually from 9am - 12pm) and are held on weekdays (which days depend on the individual Playcentre). Playcentre’s philosophy values parents as the first and best educators for their tamariki, so that whānau are strengthened and communities enriched. This sets Playcentre apart from kindergarten, childcare, preschool and daycare options. Playcentres around New Zealand foster the involvement of whānau through early childhood education, with support from kaiako/educators.
Each Playcentre around New Zealand is cooperatively managed by parents and supported by Playcentre Aotearoa staff at a regional and national level. We also offer a free accredited NZQA education programme that can lead to the NZ Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care (Level 4).
Playcentre is a nationwide charity with over 400 centres located throughout Aotearoa. At each centre you will find a supportive, fun and friendly environment awaits you.
