RARE ANTIQUE MILTON POTTERY MAJOLICA BREAD PLATE

Reserve met   |  Closed: 7:50 pm, Fri 22 Aug 2008
A very rare spongeware majolica plate by Milton pottery circa 1890

Measures 33cm in diameter, high relief embossed wheatsheafs around entire circumference, the two tabbed ends pierced.

Typical heavy gothic script legend " GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD"

There are very few of these wares around, an excellent investment or addition to the big-league NZ Pottery collection.

It is in perfect condition, NO CHIPS at all!! It is crazed but undamaged, there is a very fine hairline shown in pic 5 which does not detract and looks as old as the plate itself.

Is there any impressed marks to the reverse[in the outside region of the rests].This looks very much like a P.Hutson breadplate and not a Milton Pottery piece.  posted by: crownlynn (722 )  1:23 am, Fri 15 Aug
I will let YOU answer your own question. It makes me wonder why you asked this one when you already have all the answers. Please enter expired auction number 147579394 into the TradeMe search box. 7:41 am, Fri 15 Aug
Seller Comment:
Please note, the attribution to Milton comes from 1/ The spongeware decoration, a type not associated with Hutson and Co. 2/ The "Font style" of the lettering, which is exactly the same as other Milton plates of this era ( look at the tail of the letter Y in particular). 3/ The wheatsheaf " iconology", a very strong indicator of Milton. 4/ The size, almost identical to other pieces in Te Papa collection.

If you are referring to my auction of a Milton breadplate;it was a totally different shape, style and colour.I have included in my profile photo,a picture of a stamped Hutson breadplate...identical to the one you have...including the 'lettering' style and wheatsheaf iconology.  posted by: crownlynn (722 )  11:30 am, Fri 15 Aug
Please accept my apology for my error. Your picture of another example clearly shows this was erronously listed as a Milton piece when it is in fact Hutson. I do have to admit I am a little bit "gun shy" of people who write in and discredit other peoples auctions, but in this case I certainly had it all wrong. 2:29 pm, Fri 15 Aug
Hi I have just looked in Gail Henry's book 'New Zealand Pottery' and on the 8th page of the colour illustrations there is a breadplate with font which looks identical to yours - and it is described as being from P Hutson & Company. Cheers Peter  posted by: funho1 (709 )  1:35 pm, Fri 15 Aug
Hi Peter, thank you. I sincerely wish I had that book, as I could them have correctly listed it as Hutson. Thanks for your bid, we are well on our way to meeting the reserve price now. 2:27 pm, Fri 15 Aug
I wasn't trying to discredit your auction, merely informing you of my opinion and what I thought the item was..my apologies if I appeared to come on a bit 'heavy'.  posted by: crownlynn (722 )  4:52 pm, Fri 15 Aug
Totally understood and appreciated, all the best and thanks. 5:06 pm, Fri 15 Aug
Hi again. The 3ro pic (showing the detail) looks darker colouring than the first 2 pics, which are also different between themselves. Which of those 3 is nearest the true colour ? Thanks Peter  posted by: funho1 (709 )  8:36 am, Mon 18 Aug
Hi Peter, please rely on the third pic for an excellent representation of its colour. The first two have been washed out by camera flash, and the third pic was taken without the flash, thanks. 2:06 pm, Mon 18 Aug
