Very old oak sewing cabinet with White sewing machine.

This cabinet and its machine were manufactured by "White", a well known sewing machine company that still makes machines today for the US market. This machine and cabinet were produced at the end of the 1800s. I bought it last year to do up but have sadly not found the time, so have decided it needs to go to a new home.

The cabinet is in restorable condition; although there is some lifting of the veneer on the top of the cabinet, I think it adds to the charm. It is over 100 years old after all. The piece that hides the machine head in its lowered position is often missing from these old cabinets, but this one still has it. There is a molding missing from the front of one of the drawers, but it is possible to reproduce these.

The bobbin shuttle is also still there, along with a bobbin inside. The treadle belt is worn as you would expect, but still runs smoothly without hitching. (Might be worth noting that the White treadles run in the opposite direction to most other machines of this type.) The foot mechanism still raises and lowers the sewing foot nicely, although the needle does not stitch and the feed dogs dont move. I suspect that this is because they are probably a bit gunked up underneath and a good clean and some TLC will probably get them moving again. There is a needle in the needle clamp but its a bit rusty and I suspect not much good, but cant be certain as there is no movement.

Buyer must pick up, sorry not feasible to freight this cabinet as would just cost too much.

Check out this website - www.treadleon.net - for excellent info on restoration of treadle cabinets and machine heads. There is a section specifically about White treadle machines. :-)
