The RODREP is a new Kiwi Device for 2008. It is much kinder than a trap in that it does not hurt the rats or mice. It is safer too, much safer than using poison.

RODREP works because it is built as a high power (up to 20 Watts) ultrasonic sound emitter. It generates sounds with frequencies that are too high for humans to hear, in the range of 20kHz to 65kHz. Now rats and mice can hear these high frequencies and they find the continued and varying sound to be unpleasant, so they find another place to live. That is good. It is VERY IMPORTANT to place RODREP close to where the rats or mice sleep, under the house or in the ceiling space.

The sounds generated do not annoy my cats or my dog. In designing and building and testing this device I have driven away all of our local rats so I now have a pet rat (Boris) who is happy to show me his reactions to the different sounds - Boris does not seem to be hurt in any way by the ultrasonic sounds but he cannot sleep when the RodRep is going.

I live in a market gardening area (Pukekohe) and we keep chooks so there were initially a lot of rats and mice around here. Not any more!

In many ways this design is a bit of an overkill in that it is at least 5x more powerful than anything I could find from overseas. I do keep an imported unit here for comparison purposes and you would be quite astounded at how feeble the output is by comparison with the units I build and sell. My RodReps use a modern microprocessor programmed to generate a suitable range of frequencies.
