D E S C R I P T I O N :

A vintage three-seat sofa, crafted by J.W. BACKHOUSE LTD (now Backhouse Interiors) in Wellington, NZ, c. 1960. The matching armchair is listed separately.

BACKHOUSE has been at the forefront of the New Zealand furniture industry for over 50 years with their exclusive imported product as well as locally-manufactured furniture. The pieces produced in the 50s & 60s drew strong inspiration from modernist Scandinavian aesthetics. In fact, at the time this handsome sofa was produced, I believe BACKHOUSE held a number of licenses to manufacture designs by renown Danish furniture maestros Finn Juhl & Peter Hvidt, amongst other genuine Scandinavian-designed pieces of the day.

Today, BACKHOUSE furniture is becomming highly collectible for it's timeless, understated elegance of design, as well as their use of finest materials & expert craftsmanship techniques. Sculptural forms & fluid lines combined with intersecting angles are characteristic. Check out the distinctive 'wing form' armrests & the exposed hardwood frame with it's jaunty splayed rear leg & recessed brass hex-screw construction... all very Danish Modern indeed.

C O N D I T I O N :

Structurally, exceptionally solid; joints checked & tightened by my cabinetmaker. Cosmetically very good too. Original greeny-blue textured woolen(?) upholstery is in great shape for it's 50+ year vintage - some pilling on underside of zipped & reversible seat cushions where they lie against velcro hold-fast strips on base. Also, what look a bit like 'stocking ladders' (for want of a better term!) in the fabric weave on two cushions (pictured), which my upholsterer informs me is characteristic of this type of heavily woven fabric & does not detract. Armrests have been newly recovered in black vinyl & piped with same fabric as rest of sofa; very smart indeed. Kwila frame cleaned & Danish oiled.

Seller Comment:
Note - Base & backrest are foam over elasticised webbing - firm & supportive yet most comfortable I find. NO creaking, swaying or saggy spots at all, so please be assured of Backhouse's typical high-quality construction all round. As a taller person, I particularly like the fact that the seat is deep, the back is the right height & angle & the armrests relatively low, all of which promotes a relaxed & natural seated posture, far more so than the ubiquitous 'Dons' & 'Vono' designs.

Beautiful couches and if I had the room I would bid. But my question is actually about the credenza sideboard in the back of the first pic. Is that for sale??? Ta John  posted by: rustyboy1970 (112 )  5:54 pm, Wed 19 Nov
Thanks for the compliment John. Sorry I'm currently using this Arne Vodder piece for storage and display. Appreciate your interest though, Tim. 8:04 pm, Wed 19 Nov
hi tim. these backhouse pieces are fantastic! would you say there is still a lot of wear left in them? i particularly mean the original fabric. thanks! katie  posted by: kitty73 (157 )  2:45 pm, Fri 21 Nov
Hi Katie - absolutely! Only the arms showed any significant signs of wear hence they were redone, but the rest of the original fabric is in superb order, very thick weave & colours still most vibrant... must be high quality indeed to withstand the test of time this long & still look & feel great - probably still superior to the fabrics commonly used on contemporary furniture! thanks tim. i'm crossing my fingers for a windfall this weekend, or some quick sales on trade me! cheers  posted by: kitty73 (157 )  6:20 pm, Fri 21 Nov
My pleasure Katie. Hope it goes well for you - your Otto Larsen chairs look like nice examples! Tim 7:02 pm, Sat 22 Nov
Hi again Tim. I was wondering if we bought the couch and arm chair if you would be able to store them until January? Also, would shipping the 2 items to Wellington be $180? Cheers! Katie  posted by: kitty73 (157 )  6:50 pm, Sat 22 Nov
Yip, am happy to store them for you till Jan Katie and will only charge $100 for freight to Welly (to cover my petrol) for both pieces together. Know you'll just love these - even better in the flesh! Cheers, Tim. 7:07 pm, Sat 22 Nov
thanks tim! are you able to tell me if the reserves are the same as when they were listed a couple of weeks ago? cheers, katie.  posted by: kitty73 (157 )  5:12 pm, Sun 23 Nov
Don't mind telling you Katie that I have dropped my reserve on each piece by $100, so somebody's gonna get a great deal on this classic seating! Tim 6:12 pm, Sun 23 Nov
